Listen Again: De La Soul - Three Feet High And Rising

September 29th, 2004 by Grant Robertson

De La Soul’s major label debut, produced by Prince Paul and released on Tommy Boy Records in 1989 is on my list of albums everyone cool should own. De La’s groundbreaking use of samples, socially aware lyrics and fresh (if a bit childish) sense of humor makes this not only an entertaining listen but a milestone in hip-hop history.

Steping way out of line with samples from such suburban groups as Steely Dan and Hall and Oates, this record shows how much raw talent for sound existed within De La Soul from the very begining. It’s no wonder the members of De La remain well respected within the intelligent hip-hop set, making cameo apperances on albums such as Rahzel’s 1999 release, Make The Music.

Now on Sanctuary Records, De La Soul’s upcoming release “The Grind Date” will be their first all new creation since 2001’s “Art Official Intelligence”. Due out October 5th, it will reportedly feature a cameo by Spike Lee. Indieish staffers are diligently working to obtain a pre-release copy for review.
