Hey, Listen Here! : Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monolouge

October 2nd, 2004 by Grant Robertson

If a little tiny part of you rooted for John to make it a little bit longer on American Idol last season, there is a good chance you’ll fall in love with Sondre Lerche.

Ostensibly, Lerche is our generations version of the crooner. Smooth and mellodic, you can easily picture a much older version of Lerche pulling duty in a Las Vegas lounge room. Fear not for the cheesy though dear readers, as Lerches lyrics and voice have an honesty and emotion to them that keep Two Way Monologue grounded firmly in the boundaries of cool.

Perhaps not supprisingly Lerche is on Astralwerks, here in the U.S.. Astralwerks, it would seem, is attempting to corner the market on alternative voice talent and, Lerche is easily too good not to add to that collection. Adding to his voice’s distinct lounge feeling, there is a certain 1960’s pop sensibility to Lerche’s music. This helps to land Lerche in a growing category of hard to define yet easy to listen to post modern batchelor pad music.

Monologue starts off slowly but sweetly with the insturmental “Love You”, laced with horns it is strikingly beautiful but, has little personality. Skip track one, unless your the “I want it just like the producer intended it” people.

“Track You Down” makes for an excellent introduction to Lerche. Quiet guitars, a groovy beat and the voice that will give you cravings. If you weren’t in love with the gorgeous Norweigen from the album cover, you are now after hearing his angelicly smooth tones.

“On The Tower” is where this recording starts to rock out. Smoky rich overdriven guitar chords and a swinging beat pick you up and carry you into the depths of this album. It just gets better from here.

Two Way Monologue is packed full of tunes that sneak their way into your life. One trip through the CD and you’ll find yourself half singing, half humming your way through Lerche’s music at random points in your day. Easily addictive and breathtakingly good, Monologue is a must have and Lerche is certainly an artist to pay attention to.
