This weekend, Magnatune(the record label that isn’t evil) released a whole slew of new albums under the Creative Commons. While this is exciting in and of itself, and would easily stand alone as something people need to check out, I’d like to call attention to two that have instantly become staples of my personal playlists…

I’ve been a fan of Lisa’s work for a while now, and due to Fourstones remixes of her vocals, for longer than I originally realized. Her last album, Fruitless, hooked me instantly and I’ve been playing her songs on my FreeMatrix Radio show/Podcast, The Revolution ever since. “Tigers” goes far beyond Fruitless in insturmentation and depth while remining clear and uncluttered allowing the listener the full benefit of Lisa’s deliciously innocent vocals. This could well be one of the best self produced albums ever, and is certainly at the top of anything I’ve ever heard in that ballywick.
With a sound that reminds you of fabulous femme singers such as Amy Mann, Olive, Frente and the like, Lisa is surely headed for bigger and greater things. Look for Lisa to appear in an interview on my show, The Revolution, soon. I just hope she still responds to my emails when she’s super famous.
“The Sun Will Come Out To Blind You” - c. layne

C. Layne has a way with lyrics, a fact which was readily apparent from his first album, Potemkin Villages. Often though, artists struggle with a second album, as the old addage says you spend a lifetime writing your first release and a year working on your second. C. Layne obviously doesn’t suffer from a lack of words or ideas, as “The Sun Will Come Out To Burn You” grabs you tightly from the first line and doesn’t let go until the last.
Produced by Victor Stone, the ears behind Fourstones and the administrator of CCmixter.org, C’s new album is smooth and flowing as if it were marinated for months in a bath of groove sauce. This is an album you simply must hear to believe, and certainly must hear several times to really appreciate. Look for an interview with C featuring unreleased tracks from his vault on an upcoming episode of The Revolution.
