Fans of Creative Commons music are no strangers to the man they call Victor Stone. If the Creative Commons scene were the old west, he’d be the classic gunslinger. Armed to the teeth with the ability to back it up. A man with skills to match the icewater running through his veins.

Victor goes by the name of Fourstones when he sets music in motion. And under that moniker he makes sounds that flow with a surreal quality. His latest album, La Vie Chill, is no exception to Victor’s rule of impeccable production quality.
At home in any down-tempo lover’s collection, and as good as anything in the major label down-tempo scene which seems to be carving the sound-scape of commercials and emotional underscore moments of television today, La Vie Chill shows an impeccable ear for detail.
Victor has produced or been involved in albums for c layne, and Lisa DeBenedictis, as well as playing the role of hired gun for the popular Creative Commons remix and contest site, ccmixter.org so, his production credits are no secret, and border on the stuff of legend. Still, in listening to La Vie Chill, and being familiar with Victor’s other work, it’s easy to hear what must represent hundreds of hours of career defining work. I’ll go so far as to say that many in the Creative Commons scene will look back on this album in years to come with loving reverence. As something approaching a religious text from the hands of the master.
Specific highlights include “Walk Like Me”, with it’s incredible tension and release, and sweet classic electronic organ sounds. Also of note are “Tall People, Big Ideas (teru remix)”, and “U Meaning U”, the firstof which features Vancouver, B.C. based musician and remix artist teru with his playful but accessible beat manipulation.
If this is what the beginning of 2006 brings to the Creative Commons cone-sour, I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year shapes up. You simply must buy this album, and I rarely if ever issue directives in such a way.
