Ben Frantzen (of Adult Swim’s Squidbillies) and Kimbrew McLeod(author: Freedom of Expression: Overzealous Copyright Bozos and Other Enemies of Creativity) have teamed with CC:Mixter to select one track by a CC remix artist for prominent placement on the upcoming Copyright Criminals DVD release.
Possibly the best part about all of this is that you can check out entries to the contest in real time on CC:Mixter.
The trailer of Copyright Criminals looks incredible, and I for one can’t wait to see the final product. Ben and Kimbrew are telling a story that needs to be told in a concise and accessible way. Interviews with DJ Spooky, Pete Rock, Harry Allen( Public Enemy), Lawrence Lessig and many others tell the story of sample collage as art form, and break it down in a way that makes it relevant to even the most casual music fan.
Update: Upon rewatching the trailer for Copyright Criminals, I saw a face from my teen years. Tim Quirk for Too Much Joy (a band I loved many years ago) is possibly best known for his greatest failure (and I mean that lovingly).
Those who remember the era of 2 Live Crew and their arrest in Hollywood Florida for performing lewd lyrics in a live club, might also remember that there was an all white band who stood their ground and argued quite loudly that the main reason 2 Live Crew had been arrested was their race.
That all white band booked a gig in Hollywood Florida and played 2 Live Crew’s catalog as cover versions, and were subsequently arrested. They failed miserably to prove their point, but they helped further the explicit lyrics sticker agrument and the revolt of the Parents Music Resource Council and, won my heart in the process. That band was Too Much Joy. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go rock out to “William Holden Caufield” now. Too Much Joy invented nerdcore, I don’t care what anyone says.
