Review : Vavrek - 01

January 29th, 2006 by Grant Robertson

Buried in Jamendo, deep within over reverbed vocal lines, you’ll find one of the Creative commons most promising singer-songwriter talents, Vavrek.

Opening with the romantic and chilling “Balance”, “I wanna give you the sea, may I take you with me…“, Vavreks emotional and acoustic treatment give 01 the feel of an Elliot Smith album. Vaugely Beatles influenced and coming from a very dark place, 01 hits you with the overwhelming power of late teen angst. Old enough to know better, but young enough to still care.

For fans of acoustic singer-songwriter heart bearing, 01 should sit among the high points of Creative Commons music. Powerful lyrics, emotional delivery and over-powering melanchaoly. On these points alone 01 makes a good effort, while in production quality it falls miserably short.

It’s for that reason that I fail to rate this album higher, and it’s for the same reason that I beg Vavrek to link up with one of the many incredible CC producers that have come to the forefront in the last year. Teru, Ashwan, Victor, et al… A Vavrek album with the producion values the CC scene has shown could be a very powerful thing indeed.

What remains is listenable, a beautifully written effort that misses the mark. This is an album ripe for source track remix, if only Vavrek would see fit to publish and publicise the source material.
