An interview with remix artist Teru. You can find more from Teru here, here and here too. Teru resides in Vancouver, BC.

What is your favorite food?

Honeycomb Cereal. No milk.

What was the story behind getting your first insturment?

A recorder in Elementary school. Mandatory.
An Alto Saxaphone in High School. Drums were too loud and expensive.
A Roland D-5 keyboard was the first instrument I bought on my own. I’m still using it as my midi controller.

Tell me about your first band?

Well it’s the year 2015. And we play all our gigs inside a flying van.

What is your “day job”?

Right now I’m working at a magazine publishing company. My job before that was an Airline ticketing agent and before that I was a welder. I’m thinking I’m not too career oriented.

How did you discover the Creative Commons?

The Wired Remix Contest. Via Metafilter I think.

What is your perception of how the creative commons license fits the
emerging artist, and what effect (if any) has it had on your view of
your own music and your relationship with your fans?

Freedom. For me personally, I don’t think I’d be making music if it weren’t for ccMixter and all the great contributors there. Unfortunately, the only fan I have is the noisy one inside my computer.

Where do you find or how do you develop the sounds and textures you
use in your remixes?

My sounds come from one of two sources. FL Studio (the software I use to make music) and the samples uploaded at ccMixter. I like the fact that I’m limited. If I wasn’t, I don’t think I would ever finish anything. I used to work with a more advanced sequencing program and outboard sounds but because there was much more in the way of possiblities I would spend way too much time focusing on little details and trying too hard to be creative and original. My motto lately has been keep it simple.

What would you do to gain more listeners, if time money and resources were no object?

Skywriters, definately skywriters. Or a blimp.

What are you working on now?

At the moment I’m working on a remix of one of Burnshee Thornside’s songs off their Rock this Moon album. I just recieved the source tracks from Sweden last week. Also Lisa Denbenedictis and I have been trying to put some songs together but we’re both…… lets just say neither of us would be very good motivational speakers.

Who is your musical hero? Why?

Bob Marley or Jobim or Lennon. Having an airport named after you kicks ass.

What are your five favorite artists and, why?

1. Ennio Morricone - He’s Good, Bad and I’ll stop there.
2. Roy Ayers - still the man.
3. Brian Eno - Mr. Ambient.
4. Antonio Carlos Jobim - makes me want to travel.
5. Erik Satie - makes me feel smart.

What were your five favorites when you were 15?

Oh crap. Here’s where it gets embarassing.

1. Howard Jones - ugh.
2. New Order - I can’t listen to the vocals anymore.
3. Depeche Mode - haven’t heard them in years. Not sure if I want to.
4. Tears for Fears - stil cool.
5. Strange Advance - local pop-synth band. Not terrible.

I still have all this vinyl. I’m such a pack rat.

What’s next for Teru?

I guess I should get my ass in gear and make an album. Make millions of dollars and then buy a donut franchise.

What is your favorite word?

Awesome.

What is your least favorite word?

Awesome. I use it way too much.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Music

What turns you off?

Bad music

What is your favorite curse word?

Ferfucsake

What sound or noise do you love?

A single car driving by on a rainy road.

What sound or noise do you hate?

The telephone.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Music

What profession would you not like to do?

Politics

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

All the Buddhist and Rastfarians over here on this island.

Yes, they are. And, he’s a pretty funny guy too. More interviews coming.. I’m not going to say who they are for fear of jinxing it but, I’ll leave it at the fact that I’m actively working to bring interviews with some of the biggest names in CC music, as well as some obscure but deserving ones as well.

Damn Teru!! I swear the majority of my favorite noises are rain related and I detest my all but too necessary celly. What are we, soul brothers or something?
