Chenard Walcker tries to explore the potential of making music with cut-and-paste techniques only. He believes that recontextualization of previously ‘finished’ works can be done ethically and can in itself constitute authorship. He created the Free Sample Zone in january 2005, as a anti-copyright stance. ‘

Check out his latest full length release The Pusher which ‘was made out of 500 obscure gems from the 60’s/70’s area.’

I am not sure I understand what that means, composing music with “cut and paste techniques.” The website does not explain it either. Cool song though.

I’m not sure either but I think he’s refering to something similar to audio splicing. Like the old tape technique.

He uses word “only” after it so I’m guessing he’s trying emphasize that he doesn’t use any additional sounds other than pieces from the old songs he samples from.

    *only a guess. : )

Some of his other stuff isn’t bad. I blogged my top three and am still exploring.

    Hello,

You understood well, “cut-and-paste” means isolating loops or cuts from old songs, then looping them together to recreate something new. I often use the voice alone as a frame for developping the song, pasting on it from 10 to 30 different sources for one track - sometimes more. Indeed, i don’t use any additional sounds and i hardly use effects.

For instance, here are the original tracks cut-and-pasted for the song “Our Father with Yellow Eyes”. I pitched the bass to create new developments for the melody, a few vst reverb on some of the channels… but, to me, the very “soul” of the track comes from the collage itself, as to illustrate that “a whole is not a sum of its parts”.

    Cheers

So do you have to get permission from all of those people? Or if the clips are short enough, you can do what you want?

  • 8 Chenard Walcker Jul 13, 2006 at 7:08 pm

No you can’t do what you want, ficbot. I just do it.

Well, I like the music. Thanks for sharing it!

that’s why everyone loves creative commons. you can take every sample from every piece of music and remix it without asking for permission.
