Former RIAA chief is pro Creative Commons

Former RIAA head Hillary Rosen made an explicitly pro Creative Commons statement in an interview with Wired magazine’s Elliot Van Buskirk.

“I understand there’s a rabid philosophy on both sides of this to protect or not to protect … and I actually am not that black and white about it. I think if people want to protect their content, and want to have a DRM or a business model that limits its distribution, that’s okay. If others don’t want to, that’s okay too. That’s why I like Creative Commons. It’s all about choice. What I have focused on is what will most dramatically expand the music market at a time when device choices feel so limited and the service side is so underutilized.”

This belongs in your Unix fortune file or .sig….

Dabney Morris makes progressive eclectic Rock or folky Pop (take your pick) with a classical string quartet. I don’t listen to music like this much anymore but the strings got me hooked.

Available from Steal My Music under a Free Distribute license (both) which I had never heard of so I thought it would make this post twice as interesting.

Kulchkalash is Lone Ranger, Ray I, Danny Dread and Simon Diamond. Presented by Grant Phabao . I won’t pretend I know more about them than this. : )

As far as I can see, there is only one single available for download at the site but… I’ll take it. It’s hard to find reggae this good.

This is a quality track.

Chenard Walcker tries to explore the potential of making music with cut-and-paste techniques only. He believes that recontextualization of previously ‘finished’ works can be done ethically and can in itself constitute authorship. He created the Free Sample Zone in january 2005, as a anti-copyright stance. ‘

Check out his latest full length release The Pusher which ‘was made out of 500 obscure gems from the 60’s/70’s area.’

For the last week you’ve enjoyed the song choices of CC365 contributor Chris Campbell, who did lots of legwork and brought you several tracks previously unreleased under a Creative Commons license. Chris just happens to live near by, way up here on the east coast of Canada. Much thanks to Chris for putting together a fantastic week of CC365.

This week we swing way on over to the other coast of Canada. Eric Ohara, better known to many as CCmixter ninja Teru, joins the list of CC365 contributors from Vancouver, BC. I’ve seen a sneak peak at what he’s got cooking for you, and I’m impressed.

Big thanks to Chris and Eric both for helping make CC365 what it is. I’ll be back with 7 selections starting next week. Until then I plan to enjoy the CC365 feed bliss, what are you going to do?

“MoShang is a South African living in Taichung, Taiwan. A sound-jeweller by his own description, MoShang has been collecting rough audio-diamonds from the streets of Taiwan - be they overheard conversations, street-ads blared from the ubiquitous blue-trucks, street processions, etc… ”

I first heard MoShang when he uploaded a remix for the Fort Minor remix contest at ccMixter. Personally it was my favorite overall remix but for some reason he withdrew it before the contest closed. I remembered the name(ha!). MoShang. I’m glad I did.

Here’s his full bio.

From his full-length album Chill Dynasty to be released sometime this month.
