When Norteamericanos think of the music of Mexico there is a tendency to get caught up in stereotypes. It is important to remember that Mexico is a sophisticated and diverse society. Lady Bombon has a sound that shatters the stereotypes. This duo dishes out an edgy brand of pop that challenges a listener’s expectations. Lady Bombon is Chuchelas (the boy) and Hongo (the girl). The song, Eee-Ooo appeared on a Comfort Stand release called Stereo-Sonico (csr062). The release featured 4 songs by Lady Bonbom and 7 from another project featuring Chuchelas and Sebastian Comelli peforming under the name Gigaboy.

Chuchelas and Hongo describe their approach to their music and performance:

“…taking music seriously also means playing for fun, living in the moment and making that moment feel better. Such musical play involves experimentation–developing sounds unlike the other music out there. Fun and games are a part of Lady Bombon’s visual look, too–the band performs in wild costumes that rhyme with their wide range of musical influences. “

If you are in Mexico City tomorrow night (June 23) you can catch Lady Bombon’s live show en el Bar Factory Jalapa. (Chicas gratis de 9 a 11 pm).

Nico Schipper is a Berlin-based artist that records under the name, Nicorola. His music is released by the netlabel, 1Bit Wonder. Nicorola makes a living doing media design and graphics, but he has been doing music since he was 15, beginning with keyboard and guitar and eventually adding an electronic component. He began with simple sound editors and sequencers, later he came to work with software such as Rebirth and Reason. The song, Hijseenpipo appears on Bitstick E.P. (1Bit003), an e.p. that was released April 1, 2005.

From 1Bit Wonder’s description:

“Nicorola’s debut on 1bit wonder is a selection of songs produced over the last three years. And we say “songs” because that’s what they are: Although being exclusively electronic his approach to music is totally independent from the necessities of the dancefloor. That’s the reason why “tracks” wouldn’t fit for his works - they are more like soundtrack pieces to an imaginary movie in your head. Lean back and let the journey begin…”

Nicorola released another e.p. on 1Bit in April of this year called, Capital Bits. He rarely performs live with the exception of the occasional dance performance.

I love Hijseenpipo. I discovered it early in my travels along the Creative Commons musical path. It is a magical song that can really get into your head and become one of those pieces that provide a soundtrack for a day in the life.

I present for you a classic song of the scorned woman. When I first listened to the this tune by the French group, Delgarma, I found myself mentally searching my past to make sure I wasn’t the subject of the song. I hope not. This is one really angry woman that you probably don’t want to piss off.

According to a paragraph left at the OPSound Pool, “Delgarma is an acoustic band with 2 electroaoustic guitars, percussion, bass and a female angelic lead voice. Delgarma plays songs in english, french and swedish.”

I Wish I Didn’t Care comes from a Jamendo release called, que vive l’industrie. However, if you aren’t comfortable with the bit torrent distribution model, they also have 11 tunes (including Day 170) posted at Musique-Libre.org.

If you are in Lyon next week, you might want to head out to the MJC Monplaisir. Delgarma will be playing Thursday and Friday night starting at 8:00. I’m not sure what type of scene it will be, but I love the sound.

Day 169: Freiraum-Spiegelverkehrte Leuchtkugel

Shazaam! I loved this tune from the get-go. Zexy is the name of the 4 song ep release and it is available from the Swiss netlabel, Alpinechic. Freiraum is a duo consisting of two fellows from Zurich, Switzerland. Pablo Mateu and Andreas Freitag began the Freiraum project in 2000. They have produced 5 releases since then and have a new CD out in 2006.

freiraum

Freiraum explain their musical philosophy:

“In an industry which likes to pigeonhole bands FREIRAUM successfully defended its diverse repertoire. They are not only sound-fetishists but also created their own style that proves synthetic sounds can be more than just techno.

FREIRAUM is in its element when boundaries are broken down! The success of the last albums/releases shows that the gimmicky style has found many friends among the electro and experimental music scene.”

I want to get in on a live show sometime. I’m a big fan.

Here is my very first Sunday post on CC365. There was never a question about it. It had to be Lisa. Pull Up the Shade is a song that I have found myself drawn to time and time again. I’m not sure exactly what pull it has over me, but it is a strong one. The song appeared on Lisa’s Magnatune release, Tigers.

Pull up the shade and have a listen. A Father’s Day dose of Lisa DB.

Day 167: Code-Noite de Carnaval

In my mind, this is the best of breed from the Crammed Discs contest at ccmixter that closed late last month. It is a draw dropping take on the vocals placed on the site by Cibelle. I have played it a number of times on my radio program, Black Sweater, White Cat and love it to death.

The real beauty of these ccmixter contests is the amazing originality of the remixes. If you listen to Code’s use of Cibelle’s vocals you will hear that it sounds nothing like the original tune. Yet, there is an obvious kinship between the two pieces of music. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy just writing about it. You can listen to Cibelle’s original as it appears on her Crammed Disc release on her Myspace page. Compare the two and feel warm and fuzzy.
