It’s snowing here and for some reason I’m on a classical kick. I hope nobody minds too much.

Musikethos.org is a project of Giuseppe Mazziotti and Davide Berretta. Its primary objective is that of spreading through the web musical culture as much as possible, making use of musical recordings made available by young professional musicians part of the Musica Etica (ethical music) association, founded in Perugia in August 2006.”

Musikethos makes it easy to select by artist or composer. A great site with many talented contributors.

This is the Overture from the Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Daniele Giorgi conducts the Orchestra Pistoiese Promusica at Pistoia, Teatro Bolognini on 10/12/2005.

Some Classical violin today.

“Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John has performed as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Budapest, among many others, and given recitals around the world.” - Magnatune

She has been described as “something of a phenomenon” by The Strad magazine and a “high-powered soloist” by the New York Times.

From Bach Violin Concertos available from Magnatune.

*Also, something I found super interesting. Check out JS Bach’s cataloging system, BWV.

Ambient music is pretty hard to recommend to people because it really is a question of mood. You have to be in the right place at the right time to fully appreciate it. I hope you can find the time to do just that while listening to this.

Dava Sobel is a one man musical unit from Exeter, England who says he works with guitars, percussion, vocals and everyday household objects. He aims to show that you don’t need a full home studio to enjoy recording music. I feel he really does. This is the first track off his new release. Very nice.

Available from netlabel Negative Sound Institute.

Hi, teru here. My first pick this week is the orginal version of a song featured in a new remix contest hosted by ccMixter.org.

Creative Commons, Ghostly International and XLR8R Magazine are to thank for the new Christopher Willits “Colors Shifting” Remix Contest. San Francisco based musician and multimedia artist Christopher Willits is offering the audio source files from the song “Colors Shifting” online under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license, so that producers worldwide can use the sounds in remixes and new compositions.

“Creative commons is helping artists forge new paths through the grey areas of digital ownership, allowing us to find appropriate boundaries of sharing our work that does not exclude creative interpretation and replication. I’m honored to be included in the CC remix project and super excited to hear what everyone comes up with.” - Christopher Willits

Be sure to check out the rest of his new album Surf Boundaries too. It’s very good music, I have a feeling the remixes are going to be quite good too. : )

Mayapple WeatherWith my week of picks coming to an end I found another netlabel and an artist who is from the same province in Canada that I live in. From Cape Breton Nova Scotia, Mayapple Weather is created by Mark Boudreau and his 2004 EP “We No Longer Believe in Miracles, We Rely On Them” is filled with great and thoughtful lyrics and an autumnal feeling with some great playing as well. Released on the Sundays in Spring netlabel and available from the Internet Archive. Today’s pick is a song that will get your feet tapping with the great title, “the world called today, they sounded pissed”. This is Chris Campbell, signing off for this week.

The Canadian netlabel Nishi is a sublabel of no type and it was founded in 2002 and features music from around the world. Combining electronic and post-rock, Colophon has a dreamy and infectious release with Imprint / Tailpiece. A programmers and musician from the U.K., Colophon (Ed Powley) has also helped to run Nishi since 2005. As soon as I heard “Towers in Sleep” I knew that I found something that I wanted to share.
